*Ms. Yu graduated from the LL.M. in Global Legal Practice and received a Certificate in Business Law in March 2025.
How did you find out about the LLM program, and what attracted you to pursue it?
I learned about Keio Law School's LLM program through its strong reputation as one of the top law schools in Japan. What attracted me the most was its diverse curriculum, which offers insights into legal systems from different countries and regions. The faculty members are leading experts in various legal fields, ensuring high-quality education. During my internship at a law firm, I noticed a gap between theoretical knowledge and practical legal work. Keio's Global Legal Practice Program stood out to me because it focuses on practical skills such as negotiation, arbitration, contract drafting, and moot court. I believe these experiences will serve as a valuable bridge for my future career. Another aspect that appealed to me was the opportunity to participate in international exchange programs and dual-degree options, which allow students to study abroad and gain firsthand experience in different legal environments.
Please tell us about your most memorable class, along with the reason why.
Keio offers many courses that have greatly benefited me, but the most memorable one was Advanced Topics in American Business Law. This course introduced me to some of the most cutting-edge issues in the field of business law today. The class combined presentations and lectures, which helped me develop both my ability to conduct independent research on emerging legal topics and my presentation skills. To enhance my learning experience, I proactively teamed up with a JD student, and through our discussions, we exchanged insights on how China and Japan approach and regulate these issues. Additionally, since I had the opportunity to participate in an exchange program at UCLA, this course provided me with valuable foundational knowledge before studying in the U.S., making my transition into the new academic environment much smoother.
What do you enjoy about life at Keio?
My two years at Keio have been some of the most precious and joyful times of my life--almost like a dream. I've met friends from all over the world and built lifelong friendships that I truly cherish. After class, we often go out to eat near campus, chat for hours, and experience Japan's unique nomihodai and karaoke culture together. Although I haven't visited many of their home countries, I've learned so much about their cultures, traditions, and perspectives just through our conversations. Living in the Keio dorm was also an unforgettable experience. I met friends from different academic backgrounds, and we would cook together, exercise, and support each other in daily life. My Japanese friends even helped me proofread my assignments--sometimes with a laugh! Keio also offers so many exciting events, from welcome parties and the Waseda-Keio baseball rivalry to the Mita Festival, all of which filled my student life with youthful spirit and an incredible sense of excitement. One of the things that touched me the most was how friendship at Keio transcended language and cultural differences. Even when we didn't understand each other's native languages, we never let that become a barrier. Instead, we found creative ways to express ourselves, rephrasing and explaining until we truly connected. There were moments of awkwardness, but they were always met with sincerity, patience, and laughter. This experience made me realize how lucky I am to have such wonderful friends. I was also fortunate to have the opportunity to study abroad at UCLA, which broadened my horizons even further. Keio has not only given me a world-class education but also a global community and experiences that I will carry with me for a lifetime.
What are your plans after you finish your studies at Keio? What do you think you will take with you from this experience?
After completing my studies at Keio, I plan to pursue a career in the legal field, where I can apply the global perspective and practical skills I have gained. Keio's strong emphasis on both theory and hands-on learning has equipped me to navigate complex legal and business environments with confidence. Beyond academics, what I will carry with me is the invaluable ability to communicate and collaborate across cultures. The diverse experiences and friendships I have built at Keio have broadened my perspective and strengthened my adaptability. No matter where I go next, the lessons and connections from Keio will continue to shape my journey.
Any advice for prospective LLM students? How would you recommend the Keio LLM program to the students?
My advice for prospective LLM students is simple: pack light! You can easily find most daily essentials at drugstores or 100-yen shops in Japan. While studying hard is important, don't forget to enjoy everything Japan has to offer--its culture, food, and unique experiences. If you're shy, I encourage you to step out of your comfort zone and say hi to new classmates. You'll be surprised at the friendships you can build. And if you ever need help--whether it's about academics, career development, or daily life--don't hesitate to reach out to professors, administrative staff, or dorm managers. Everyone is incredibly supportive. Finally, if you're looking to connect with top legal professionals and gain insight into the latest industry trends and practical skills, Keio's LLM program is the perfect opportunity. Make the most of it!
