Tenure-Track Faculty Position At Keio University Law School
Keio University Law School is recruiting a tenure-track faculty member. The University will offer the position under the Japanese government's "Top Global University Project."
Keio University is one of the most competitive private universities in Japan, and the Keio University Law School, established in 2004 as part of the reform of Japan's legal education and training system, already occupies a position as one of Japan's top law schools.
Qualifications: We seek candidates of non-Japanese nationality for a tenure-track faculty position at the Law School.
Candidates will ideally be an early career researcher with excellent academic credentials at both the undergraduate and graduate level, will hold a doctorate level degree in Law or a related area (JD, JSD, Ph.D. or similar), and will have demonstrated strong interest and capability in both law-related research and teaching.
Duties: The successful candidate will be expected to contribute actively to the Law School's programs through both teaching and research.
The successful candidate will teach law courses in a number of subjects in English to both Japanese and foreign students. These courses will be within the Law School's JD curriculum, in a new LL.M. degree program now being planned for implementation from the Spring 2017 term, and/or in other programs of the University. Teaching loads may vary, and the successful candidate will typically teach 2 courses per semester (each 2-credit course typically meets one time per week for 90 minutes over a 15-week semester).
Though the ability to teach in Japanese language is not required, student advising in Japanese will be necessary. The internal business of the university and Law School is conducted in Japanese.
Writing and submitting papers to academic journals on a frequent basis, approximately one paper a year to distinguished journals, is an essential part of the successful applicant's duties and the tenure determination.
About Our Tenure-Track System: The tenure-track period shall not exceed five years. An interim review of the faculty member's performance and progress toward tenure will be conducted not later than three years following appointment. The position comes with the prospect of advancement to a tenured position at Keio University Law School after evaluation of the faculty member's research and teaching performance.
The faculty member will be designated initially as a tokunin-koushi (特任講師) in Japanese, or "Assistant Professor" in English. After successful completion of the interim tenure review, the designation may be elevated to tokunin-junkyoju (特任准教授) in Japanese, or "Project Associate Professor" in English.
Salary and Benefits: These will be determined based on the university's rules. Please make inquiries to the Law School Office. Contact details are given below.
Applications: Please send your detailed curriculum vitae to the Dean, Professor Katayama (e-mail: lawjm@info.keio.ac.jp ), by November 27, 2015. After the screening of candidates according to the standards of the university, the successful candidate will be selected. The contract will start from April 1, 2016.
